Rodenstock was founded in Munich, Germany in the year 1877 by Thuringian Josef Rodenstock. Thuringian started his journey by making and selling barometers, precision scales, and measuring instruments, together with offering spectacles lenses, and frames. From developing his first lens, called the “diaphragm spectacle lens”, the company slowly expanded by exporting its products to countries like Austria. Eventually, building its factory and developing various types of lenses, including camera lenses.
