Protect Your Vision: Recognizing Eye Issues and Their Symptoms

Girl rubbing her eyes - protect your vision

Your eyes are your ticket to seeing loved ones, breathtaking scenery, and favorite food. But if you’re experiencing vision problems and discomfort, it could bring life changes. Early treatment is key to preventing them from becoming a bigger problem. So, the sooner you spot these symptoms, the better!

Let’s explore some common Eye issue and vision problems symptoms to prevent eye degeneration and protect your vision.

Swelling

The eyes swell for multiple reasons. Most are not grave, but they can still affect your vision health. An eye doctor can properly diagnose what causes the swelling. They can be from allergies, fluid retention, or eye infections that can harm your vision if left untreated.

Some common issues to watch out for are black eye, blocked tear duct, and pink eye. Trauma in the head, neck, or face may be another reason for swelling. The inflammation and irritation occurring in the eyelids result in a swollen, discolored appearance.

Red Eyes

Have you ever woken up with bloodshot eyes after pulling an all-nighter to binge-watch your favorite series or finish a school paper? Red eyes can indicate various issues in your body — from a lack of sleep, contact lens irritation, eye strain, or a stye. Inflammation or expansion of the eyes’ small blood vessels makes the white portion of the eye pink or red.

Over-the-counter eye drops and lots of rest typically help with red eyes. However, if they still don’t clear up, visit your eye doctor as it could already be a symptom of a more serious condition.

Blind Spots

Dark spots can appear in the center of your vision, around the edges, or may look like a moving flickering light. Scotoma, the medical term for blind spots, may be temporary and happen in one or both eyes. In other cases, they stay permanently, which causes discomfort. As the nerves in the retina fail to send signals to the brain, they cause a problem in the vision field.

They may come with migraines or indicate a more serious problem. Some causes include stroke, a tumor, trauma, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, or toxic chemical exposure.

Blurred or Distorted Vision

Feeling tired or experiencing fatigue can cause blurry vision or a symptom of another condition. Although a common symptom with many potential causes, there are various reasons why people experience distorted vision. Refractive errors (astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness), dry eyes, glaucoma, and cataracts are some possible causes.

However, it can be a medical emergency when the blurring starts suddenly. These significant changes to your vision call for immediate care.

Excessive Tearing

Tears can also be present despite not feeling down. Continuous watering of the eyes may indicate sensitivity to light, wind, or temperature changes. When the eyes become irritated, they produce more tears to soothe and lubricate them.

They can signal other problems, including eye infections or a blocked tear duct. Knowing what causes the excessive tearing helps relieve it. But you may also protect your eyes by wearing the proper eyewear and sunwear.

Light Sensitivity

You’ll be squinting more than usual when your eyes are light-sensitive. Seeing any bright light or going outside becomes a hassle because of the discomfort or pain. In more severe cases, exposure to any light will cause considerable pain. Thus making it difficult for you to open your eyes.

Migraines usually cause light sensitivity, but some brain and eye conditions need immediate care. Among these are meningitis and corneal abrasion. So make sure to seek help from an eye doctor.

Double Vision

Are there instances when you think you’re seeing twins? Having double vision creates this illusion. It happens when you see two images of the same object, which occurs infrequently, randomly, or all the time. Thus, there may be difficulties with balancing, reading, and doing daily routines.

You may also notice the following when you have double vision:

  • A wandering or cross-eyed look
  • Pain around your eyes, and when you move them
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Eye weakness

Headache

A throbbing pain in the head, neck, and face usually indicates emotional or physical distress. People experience this common condition multiple times. Plus, headaches can affect several parts of the head, depending on the cause.

Lifestyle changes, lack of sleep, and skipping meals are common reasons to feel that throbbing pain. However, it can also indicate a need for an eye checkup, especially when paired with blurry vision.
