Havaianas was created in 1962 by the Brazilian footwear company Alpargatas. The name "Havaianas" is derived from the Portuguese word for "Hawaiians," indicating the laid-back and beach vibe lifestyle associated with the Hawaiian islands. Its sandals' design was also inspired by traditional Japanese sandals called Zori, a pair of sandals made of fabric straps and rice straw soles.

The Havaianas' original target market was people from Brazil with lower incomes. After seeing the brand's potential, Havianas started incorporating creative patterns and various colors in its slippers, making it not only comfortable footwear but also a fashion statement.
